Managing Director of MGH Educonsult, Matthew Hornshaw, has been involved in international education since 1992 holding a number of senior positions in both the public and private sector and graduating with an MBA in 2000. From 1992 until 2004, Matthew was influential in ensuring that the University of Hull led the way with TNE activities & Distance Taught MBA programmes, heading up the management of the Masters & MBA Unit and overseeing programmes based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Greece and in a number of UK centres including London, Lincoln and Hull. Matthew also headed up student recruitment and partnership development activities for the Business School.
With a strategic move over to the International Office Matthew was asked to build and head up the Africa team establishing the university brand in the continent. During this period Matthew gained extensive knowledge and networks in many African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria. Matthew has developed a vast network in Nigeria and Ghana with valuable contacts and associates. It was also a period that Matthew assisted with building student numbers from other markets such as Mexico, Japan and Taiwan.
Nigeria has proved valuable experience for Matthew and he was part of the British Council Nigeria Advisory Group as well as being involved with the support of Nigerian youth through the International Conference of Nigerian Students in the UK and Xn Foundation. A great supporter of Africa, Matthew has been asked to speak at many Africa related events and always enjoys the delights of the continent. In 2005 Matthew played host to the Ghana International Ladies football squad (the Black Queens) at Hull and became closely involved with the Ghana Football Association providing a number of support activities both in Ghana and the UK and initiating sports science, football coaching and charity projects with the GFA.
After being approached in 2010 by the largest UK independent, student recruitment company, Matthew moved into the private sector to become UK Director and Group Business Development Director overseeing and managing relations with more than 90 UK partners and being the commercial driver for the overseas divisions for markets in Africa and Pakistan. Being closely involved in an input to and setting of recruitment strategies for a large number of UK education providers, Matthew is adept at balancing commercially driven aims, academically rewarding outcomes and the managing of expectations of stakeholders for win-to-win, blended strategies.
Matt has been approached to undertake a number of interim and contracted roles at universities and educational bodies including:
- Director of International at De Montfort University, UK. Whilst experiencing a period of review and change, Matt developed the role to retrain, motivate & lead a large global team, located in the UK, China, India and Brazil, to produce best ever student recruitment numbers with a 50% rise year on year. Working closely with the senior management team Matt left DMU in a far better position ready to move to a new level and with a sustainable international future.
- Group Director, Future Students Office, the University of Leicester. Initially approached as a consultant to review and realign international student recruitment and partnerships, Matt was asked to set up a new Future Students Office refreshing and bringing together Home and International Student Recruitment and marketing functions, an updated Student and Staff Mobility division, a global admissions team, initiating a new partnerships team and managing this globally disperate team of around 80 staff to provide a platform for the university to re-establish and build a brand for a 10 year strategy.
- International Business Development Consultant, CMI (UK). Consultancy to develop and implement a new international business development strategy with focus on Africa, Asia & the Middle East engaging with existing & new UK & global partners including private and public sector education providers, governments and external bodies to extend reach into global markets. Ensuring development of Salesforce CRM system to improve retention & develop new global business
- Interim Head of Membership & Strategic International Engagement, Association of Commonwealth Universities. Working directly with the Senior Leadership Team to provide strategic lead to a change management project whilst developing and implementing a strategic plan for increased engagement with member universities and external stakeholders across the Commonwealth with a view to a more commercial business outlook and to engage more effectively with current members to improve retention and increase recruitment in underdeveloped markets.
Matthew also has experience of initiating and providing staff training and development sessions and presenting at conferences around the world; areas include International Student Recruitment, Recruitment from Hard to Reach Markets, International Office Management, Cultural Awareness, Brand Development & Management, International Marketing Channels and International Partnerships among others.
