The UK Border Agency to be Scrapped (March 2013)
Managing Director of MGH Educonsult, Matthew Hornshaw, has been involved in international education since 1992 holding a number of senior positions in both the public and private sector and graduating with an MBA in 2000. From 1992 until 2004, Matthew was influential in ensuring that the University of Hull led the way with TNE activities & the Distance Taught MBA programmes in South East Asia, heading up the management of the Masters & MBA Unit and overseeing the programmes located in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
During the 1990s, the Hull MBA programme extended its coverage into Saudi Arabia (with the Aramco oil company), Bahrain, the UAE and Oman. A portfolio of Masters programmes followed in the UK and Matthew headed up a large team to ensure full support to both students and staff and led the student recruitment and marketing function for all programmes. During this time there were over 1000 students following Hull MBA and Masters programmes around the world; a number of specific markets were targeted at this time and Matthew built niche recruitment sources from areas such as Mexico, Colombia, Russia & Jordan.
Having travelled extensively for over 10 years, Matthew then moved fully into international student recruitment and partnerships working primarily in Africa and building the university brand in the continent. During this period Matthew gained extensive knowledge and networks in many African countries including Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria - West Africa becoming a favourite destination with Nigeria dominating. Matthew developed a vast network in Nigeria and Ghana with valuable contacts and associates. It was also a period that Matthew assisted with building student numbers from other markets such as Mexico, Japan and Taiwan.
Nigeria has proved valuable experience for Matthew and he was part of the British Council Nigeria Advisory Group as well as being involved with the support of Nigerian youth through the International Conference of Nigerian Students in the UK and Xn Foundation. A great supporter of Africa, Matthew has spoken at many Africa related events and always enjoys the delights of the continent. In 2005 Matthew played host to the Ghana International Ladies football squad (the Black Queens) at Hull and became closely involved with the Ghana Football Association providing a number of support activities both in Ghana and the UK and initiating sports science, football coaching and charity projects with the GFA.
After being approached in 2010 by the largest UK independent, student recruitment company, Matthew moved into the private sector to become UK Director overseeing and managing relations with more than 70 UK partners and being the commercial driver for the overseas divisions for markets in Africa and Pakistan. Being closely involved in an input to and setting of recruitment strategies for a large number of UK education providers, Matthew is adept at balancing commercially driven aims, academically rewarding outcomes and the managing of expectations of stakeholders for win-to-win, blended strategies.
During 2016, Matt undertook an Interim role as Director of International at De Montfort University, UK. Whilst experiencing a period of review and change, Matt developed the role to retrain, motivate & lead a large global team, located in the UK, China, India and Brazil, to produce the best ever student recruitment numbers with a 50% rise year on year. Working closely with the senior management team Matt left DMU in a far better position ready to move to a new level and with a sustainable international future.
Matthew also has experience of initiating and providing staff training and development sessions and presenting at conferences around the world; areas include International Student Recruitment, Recruitment from Hard to Reach Markets, International Office Management, Cultural Awareness, Brand Development & Management, International Marketing Channels and International Partnerships among others.
